When and How to Renew Your Sponsorship Approval

Sponsorship approvals expire after five years. Here’s how to renew your status as an approved employer and avoid interruptions to your visa nominations.

Standard Business Sponsorship approvals are generally valid for five years. To keep sponsoring workers, you must apply for renewal before your approval expires, ideally at least three months in advance.

Many businesses forget that their sponsorship approval has an expiry date. When it lapses and you try to nominate a worker, the Department will refuse the application. That can cost weeks of delays and lost fees.

Renewing is usually straightforward if you’ve stayed compliant: paid the correct salaries, kept records, and reported changes. Additionally, it is often automatically renewed if the application is lodged before the current sponsorship expires. But you still need to show that your business is active and financially sound.

Steps to Renew

  1. Check your approval expiry in ImmiAccount or ask your migration agent.
  2. Prepare updated business documents: ABN registration, financials, and staff details.
  3. Submit the renewal application with the current fee.
  4. Continue meeting all sponsorship obligations while it’s processed.

If your approval expires before you renew, you can’t sponsor anyone, even existing workers. We’ve seen companies forced to pause projects because of this oversight.
