The new visa tends to attract world-class talent across various fields, from cutting-edge researchers to established and emerging entrepreneurs, professional athletes and talented individuals in the arts.
From December 7, 2024, the Global Talent visa has been replaced by the National Innovation visa. The new visa intends to attract established and emerging leaders with world-leading skills as global researchers, entrepreneurs, innovative investors, and high-calibre athletes and creatives.
The Global Talent visa is closed to new applications from December 6, 2024. The Immigration Department will continue to process available Global Talent visa applications by processing priorities.
The National Innovation Visa (NIV) retains subclass 858, an invitation-only permanent visa program for exceptionally talented migrants from around the world. However, the NIV targets professional that has an internationally recognised track record of exceptional and notable achievement in one of the following areas:
The applicant will be required to demonstrate a track record of high-calibre research, including notable publications in highly regarded journals, high citation counts, and evidence of awards and/or recognition that highlight their leadership in their field.
Having an established or emerging entrepreneur in fields that are being targeted by the Australia government as economic, social, cultural, technology, academic, artistic and sport.
Individuals committed to impactful investments, prioritizing issues of quality and influence over financial benchmarks.
Have superior abilities and achievements to others in your area. High-performing, top-tier as acclaimed as exceptional in any country where your area is practiced that can contribute to Australia’s sporting and creative sectors.
According to the Government, invitations to apply and NIV will be in the following order of priority:
Although it is an invitation-only visa with a permanent program, it is also a great option for high-level professionals and business, academic and healthcare institutions to invest in hiring exceptional talent for their teams.
The applicant must be nominated by an Australian resident person or organisation who is willing and able to attest to his/her achievements.
He/she must be an internationally recognised talent, with records published of exceptional and notable achievement as a professional, sportsperson, artist, academic or researcher.
With recorded skills and achievements that are unlikely to diminish in the foreseeable future. The candidate must also be in a field that is recognised and accepted in Australia and has an international standing.
There is no age limit for this visa, and the individual can be living in Australia or in another country to submit an Expression of Interest. From submitting the Expression of interest, the person can be invited by the Immigration Department to apply for the National Innovation Visa (NIV).
