How to Choose the Right Occupation for Sponsorship

When nominating a position for sponsorship, employers must select an occupation code from Australia's standard classification system: ANZSCO. This single decision affects everything that follows: the job description, the salary, the eligible visa streams, and how the Department assesses the entire application.

It is also one of the most commonly mishandled parts of the process.

What immigration actually assesses

The Department of Home Affairs does not assess job titles. It assesses whether the actual duties of the nominated role genuinely correspond to the occupation code selected.

A "Marketing Manager" at one business might spend most of their time creating content and running social media. At another, the same title involves strategic planning, budget management, and team leadership. These are different roles, and they may correspond to different occupation codes, regardless of the shared title.

The occupation must reflect what the person will genuinely do in your business, not what sounds most eligible on a list.

The mistake most employers make

The most common error is selecting an occupation because it appears on the eligible list and then writing the job description around it, rather than starting from the actual role.

This approach produces applications where the duties feel constructed rather than genuine. The Department notices when a job description is written to justify an occupation rather than describe a real position — and it raises questions that slow the process down or result in refusal.

The right approach

Start with the real role. What will this person actually do on a typical day? What level of responsibility do they hold? Where does the position sit within the business?

Once those questions are answered honestly, identify which occupation code most accurately represents the role. That sequence — real role first, occupation second — produces a nomination where the duties, the occupation, and the salary all tell the same consistent story.

When the role needs adjustment

Sometimes, after an honest review, it becomes clear that the role as currently structured does not strongly align with any eligible occupation. In these cases, the right step is to consider whether the position can be restructured (expanding certain duties, clarifying responsibilities) so that it genuinely fits an appropriate occupation. That is not fabrication. It is alignment.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if the wrong occupation is selected?

At best, it leads to delays and Requests for Further Information. In more significant cases, the nomination is refused. A pattern of occupation mismatches can also affect a business's standing as a sponsor over time.

Can the occupation be changed after the nomination is lodged?

In limited circumstances, a nomination can be withdrawn and re-lodged. This adds time and cost. Getting it right before lodging is always the more efficient approach.
