English Test Changes for Sponsored Visas: What Employers Must Know (482, 186, 494)

Written by Seven Corp | Sep 17, 2025 1:15:00 AM

From 7 August 2025, only in-person English tests at secure centres are accepted for sponsored visas. From 13 September 2025, extra changes apply to the 482 visa, including new test options and the end of Cambridge C1 Advanced for 482 applications.

Why It Matters for Employers

If your nominee takes the wrong test or attends the test online, their visa may be refused. That means delays in filling roles, extra costs, and disruption to your business.

What Changed on 7 August 2025

  • Applies to all sponsored visas (482, 186, 494).
  • Only secure, test-centre exams are accepted.
  • At-home or remote tests are not valid.
  • Accepted tests include: IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, OET, CELPIP General, LanguageCert Academic, MET.

What Changed on 13 September 2025 (482 visa only)

  • Applies to the 482 Skills in Demand visa.
  • Three new test options added.
  • Some score benchmarks adjusted.
  • Cambridge C1 Advanced no longer accepted if taken after this date.
  • Candidates may use single skill retake if the provider allows and the Department accepts.

English Levels Required

  • 482 visa → Vocational English (minimum in each skill, no overall score).
  • 186 & 494 visas → Competent English (higher level).

Employer Checklist

  • Confirm which test your candidate booked.
  • Check the date (before or after 7 August / 13 September).
  • Remind candidates to attend a secure test centre.
  • Plan ahead – test dates book out quickly.

Final Thoughts

These changes don’t affect your sponsorship obligations, but they do affect your candidate’s eligibility. Getting it wrong means delays.
